Why You Can’t Use Chips for Tips in Nevada

If you’re planning your first trip to Las Vegas, or indeed any Nevada Casino, then you will probably be planning your budget. Unlike when playing online baccarat, when visiting a land casino, it is necessary to take tipping into account.
Those who have seen movies set in Las Vegas may well imagine that it is possible to tip with casino chips instead of cash. However, surprisingly, despite their frequent use, tipping casino employees with chips is actually illegal under Nevada gaming regulations.
Chips Not Considered Legal Tender
While the practice of throwing a dealer a chip or two may seem harmless, Nevada state law explicitly forbids the use of casino chips for anything other than gambling or exchanging for cash at the casino of issue. According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board Regulation 12.060, chips are not considered legal tender and cannot be accepted as payment for goods or services. Chips remain the casino’s property and represent nothing more than a debt owed by the casino to the player.
This regulation can be traced back to changes brought in around 1980. Before then, casino chips were widely accepted as legitimate currency throughout the state, usable in grocery stores, restaurants, and even as donations to charities. However, the introduction of higher-value chips and the increasing problems of counterfeit and stolen chips led to stricter regulations designed to limit their misuse. Federal regulations against creating alternative currencies also influenced the decision, prompting Nevada to clarify its stance and bring state laws in line with national rules.
Today, these rules mean that tipping your dealer or server directly with chips technically places the employee at risk of violating state law. However, while it is illegal, enforcement of the law is lax and no gambler has ever faced legal consequences solely for tipping with chips. The real issue arises when casino employees become the subject of scrutiny for other reasons. In such cases, accepting chips could make their legal troubles worse, which explains why many dealers or servers may subtly decline them or request cash.
The Tipping with Chips Workaround
However, casinos and their employees have come up with an informal but acceptable workaround for tipping dealers specifically. If you wish to tip your dealer, you can offer to place a bet on his/her behalf. Simply place your chip just outside your betting area on the table, which is a widely understood indication that it is intended for the dealer. Should the bet win, then the dealer receives the winnings in cash, which effectively converts the chip into an acceptable tip. Most dealers appreciate this gesture, as it adds a bit of excitement to their shift while respecting the boundaries of the law.
Unfortunately, this workaround doesn’t work as smoothly with servers, bartenders, or other service staff outside the gaming tables. In such scenarios, tipping in cash remains the simplest and safest route. Since casino chips aren’t legally transferable and have no inherent monetary value outside the casino’s gaming floor, tipping service personnel with cash ensures you are both complying with the law and making life easy for the staff receiving tips.
Misunderstandings about chip tipping often come from visitors’ experiences in other gambling jurisdictions, where regulations are less stringent. Unlike Nevada, many other states and countries view casino chips more leniently and allow them to circulate more freely. In Nevada, however, strict rules persist largely to maintain regulatory clarity, minimize fraud, and simplify casino accounting procedures.
Buying and Selling Chips as Collectibles
For collectors, though, casino chips hold a different type of value. Chips from closed casinos or limited-edition ones can be legally bought and sold as collectibles online, as long as their value derives from rarity rather than their monetary worth. You will often find collectible chips for sale on sites like eBay and Nevada regulators have no objection to this, as long as it doesn’t promote chips as a replacement for cash.
Ultimately, if you are visiting Nevada’s casinos, the best thing to do is to keep some cash to hand for tipping. This way, you avoid any potential issues and can be sure that your dealers and service staff will appreciate your tips.
